The Benefit of Incidental Appendectomuy Associated with Cholecystectomy



Abstract
This study is a clinical analysis of 194 patients who underwent cholecystectomy(150 cases) and cholecystectomy with incidental appendectomy(44 cases) under gallbladder diseases at the Soon Chun Hyang Medical Collage Hospital during the last 8
years
from
January 1985 to December 1992.
@ES The results obstained were as follows:
@EN 1) The male to female ratio was 1 : 1.6, and the incidental appendectomy was mostly done under 60 years of age.
2) The mean operating time was 126.5 minutes at only cholecystectomy and 116.0 minutes at cholelcystectomy with incidental appendectomy.
3) The wound infections were totally 28 cases(14.6%), and 24 cases(16.0%) at cholecystectomy and 4 cases(9.1%) at incidental appendectomy with cholecystectomy.
4) The wound infections associated with the inflammation of gallbladder were 19 cases(35.2%) of 54 cases at acute inflammation of gallbladder and 9 cases(6.4%) of 140 cases at chronic inflammation of gallabladder.
5) The mean hospitalization were 13.6 days at cholecystectomy and 13.2 days at incidental appendectomy with cholecystectomy. If the wound infection occured, it were increased over 3.8 days at cholecystectomy and 1.2 days at incidental
appendectomy
with
cholecystectomy.
6) The pathologic reports of appendices removed in this series revealed that in 10 cases or 22.0%, either acute or chronic disease existed.
7) The postoperative complications occured in 46 cases(23.0%). The wound infection(14.0%) was the most frequent complication.
